Online Payment Solutions: How to Choose the Right One in KSA

The right online payment solutions for a Saudi business is one that is licensed to settle your money, accepts mada and the other methods your customers use, holds current security certifications, and connects to your store without a rebuild. Fees and features matter too, but those four checks decide whether a provider is even on the shortlist.

You can verify each of those checks in a few minutes from public registers and published documents. Under each one below we give HyperPay’s own answer and where to confirm it, so you can test our claims the same way you would test any other provider’s.

What should an online payment solution do for a Saudi business?

An online payment solution should let customers pay by card, wallet or installments on your website, app or a payment link, check each payment for fraud, and move the money into your bank account with records you can reconcile. In Saudi Arabia it also needs mada, 3-D Secure and a licensed party handling settlement.

That definition rules out a lot of tools that call themselves payment solutions. A plugin that only draws the card form is not enough on its own. Neither is a foreign gateway that cannot settle in riyals into a Saudi account. If you are still sorting out which types of tool you need, start with our map of digital payment solutions and how they fit together, then come back to choose a provider.

Is the provider licensed to settle your money?

This is the first question because it is the one that can stop your revenue. Under SAMA Circular 46004436, dated 24 July 2024, companies that offer only technical linkage for e-commerce payments do not need a SAMA license, but they may not contract merchants, run KYC and anti-money-laundering checks, or settle funds into merchant bank accounts.

Those tasks belong to a SAMA-licensed payment company or a bank. A provider can therefore run a working checkout and still not be the party legally allowed to pay you.

How to check a provider in about a minute

  • Open SAMA’s list of licensed payment service providers.
  • Search for the provider’s Saudi legal entity name, which may differ from its brand name.
  • Note the activity type (Payment Institution or Electronic Money Institution) and the license expiry date.
  • Ask the provider which Saudi Payments permits it holds for mada, and whether the entity on your contract is the one on the register.

HyperPay’s entry reads “Hyperpay Inc Saudi Information Systems Technology Company”, activity type Electronic Money Institution, unified number 7016872546, license valid until 29/12/2029. From Saudi Payments, HyperPay also holds permits as a Payment Technology Service Provider (PTSP) and as an eMSP Payment Gateway. The SAMA license covers the money; the Saudi Payments permits cover the mada connection.

Does it accept the payment methods your customers use?

Payment methods decide whether a ready buyer completes the order. Saudi shoppers expect mada, Apple Pay, international cards, local wallets and installment options. In the 2025 Global Digital Shopping Index for Saudi Arabia, by Visa Acceptance Solutions and PYMNTS Intelligence, 72% of Saudi consumers said the availability of their preferred payment method shapes where they buy, against a 55% global average.

mada matters most because it is the domestic debit network. SAMA’s mada page confirms mada cards can be added to Apple Pay, so a store that accepts both covers card and phone payers in one move. Our guide to mada cards for merchants explains co-badging, mada online rules and logo placement.

Beyond the local basics, look at what your own customers need. Installments help with higher-value baskets. SADAD suits customers who prefer to pay bills through their bank. UnionPay and PayPal matter if you sell to visitors or abroad. Ask for the full list in writing, by country.

Method Who it serves HyperPay
mada Saudi debit cardholders Supported
Visa, Mastercard, American Express Credit card holders, international buyers Supported
Apple Pay iPhone and Apple Watch users, including mada cards Supported
STC Pay Local wallet users Supported
Tabby, Tamara Shoppers who want to pay in installments Supported
SADAD Customers paying through their bank Supported
UnionPay, PayPal Visitors and cross-border buyers Supported

How do you check security beyond “PCI compliant”?

Almost every provider says it is PCI compliant, so ask for specifics: the PCI DSS version, the validation level, and any ISO certifications. PCI DSS v4.0.1 is the current version. The PCI Security Standards Council retired v4.0 on 31 December 2024, leaving v4.0.1 as the only active version of the standard.

Then check how the solution protects each transaction. SAMA says mada e-commerce runs over 3-D Secure, so the provider should support it on every mada payment. Ask what fraud screening exists beyond that: rules, blacklists, machine-learning scores, and who can change the settings.

HyperPay holds PCI DSS v4.0.1 at Level 1, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 for information security and ISO 22301 for business continuity. HyperPay Protect screens payments in real time using machine learning and rules, lets you blacklist by region, IP, address or card details, and adds 3-D Secure from Visa and Mastercard.

How does settlement work, and what should you ask?

Settlement is the step where captured payments become money in your bank account, after authorization and capture. It is also where vague answers cost the most, because cash flow depends on it. Our explainer on how a payment gateway works walks through authorization, capture and settlement in order.

Ask every provider the same questions and get the answers in the contract:

  • Which licensed entity or bank settles the funds, and into which account?
  • What is the settlement schedule for each payment method, and does it change on weekends and holidays?
  • Which fees are deducted before settlement, and which are invoiced separately?
  • What reports do you get to reconcile settlements with orders, and in what format?
  • How do refunds and chargebacks affect your settled balance?

HyperPay sets out its onboarding on its payments page in five steps: sign the agreement, complete the paperwork (HyperPay refers you to a banking partner to open the merchant account), integrate with support from HyperPay’s team, go live, then ongoing account management. Settlement terms for your business are agreed in writing during that process. We do not publish a one-size-fits-all settlement promise, and you should be wary of any provider that quotes one before it knows your business.

Will it fit your store, invoices and operations?

A payment solution should fit around the way you already sell. That means plugins for your e-commerce platform, an API for custom builds, payment links for sales that happen in chat, and tools for the money flows that come after checkout, such as payouts to sellers or deposits for bookings.

HyperPay offers ready-made plugins for popular shopping-cart platforms and a customizable payment form for custom checkouts. Its gateway also supports tokenization, recurring payments and pre-authorization, including for mada cards, which matters for subscriptions and deposits. HyperBill sends invoices by SMS, email or WhatsApp, with no website needed. HyperSplit pays sellers, drivers and partners through a payouts API. HyperHospitality connects hotel payments with Oracle OPERA, and HyperTap takes contactless payments on a phone when you also sell in person.

How much does checkout friction cost?

Baymard Institute gives a sense of scale. It calculates an average documented cart abandonment rate of 70.22%, based on 50 studies. Its survey of US online shoppers then shows which reasons relate to payments. These are US figures and should not be read as Saudi data. They still point to the problems a payment solution can fix.

Reasons for abandoning checkout, Baymard US benchmark

Did not trust the site with card details · 19%
Checkout too long or complicated · 17%
Card was declined · 10%
Not enough payment methods · 9%

Each bar maps to a choice in your payment set-up. A recognisable, licensed checkout and familiar logos address trust. A shorter form and wallets such as Apple Pay cut the length. Correct mada routing and 3-D Secure handling can cut avoidable declines. A full method list deals with the last one.

Why choose HyperPay as your online payment solution?

HyperPay is the online payment solution we recommend for Saudi businesses, and the case rests on facts you can check. It is a SAMA-licensed Electronic Money Institution with its own Saudi Payments permits, so the company you integrate with is itself regulated in the Kingdom. Its security certifications are the current versions. Its method list covers what Saudi shoppers actually use, from mada and Apple Pay to Tabby, Tamara and SADAD.

Here is the scorecard, filled in for HyperPay. Use the same columns for every provider on your list; where an answer is “contact sales” or missing, write that down too. For a survey of the providers active in the Kingdom, see our comparison of the best payment gateways in Saudi Arabia.

Common Questions about Online Payment Solutions

What is an online payment solution?

An online payment solution is a service that lets a business accept payments on a website, app or payment link. It captures card or wallet details, checks them with the issuing bank, screens for fraud and settles the money into the merchant’s account. In Saudi Arabia it should support mada and 3-D Secure.

Which is the best online payment solution in Saudi Arabia?

The best choice is a provider licensed by SAMA to settle funds, with Saudi Payments permits for mada, current PCI DSS v4.0.1 certification and the methods your customers use. HyperPay meets all of these and lists its register entry publicly, so you can verify the license before signing.

How do I check if a payment company is licensed by SAMA?

Open the licensed payment service providers page on SAMA’s website and search for the company’s Saudi legal entity name. The entry shows the activity type, such as Electronic Money Institution or Payment Institution, and the license expiry date. Confirm that the entity on your contract matches it.

Can I accept online payments without a website?

Yes. Payment links and online invoices let you collect money through SMS, email or WhatsApp, and the customer pays on a secure hosted page. HyperBill, HyperPay’s invoicing product, works without a website or app, which suits service providers and businesses that sell through social media.

Do I need a technical team to integrate an online payment solution?

Not always. Stores on common e-commerce platforms can use ready-made plugins, and payment links need no integration at all. Custom websites and apps use an API, which needs a developer. HyperPay supports merchants through integration as one of its onboarding steps.

To compare HyperPay with the other names on your shortlist, look up our entry on SAMA’s register first. Then contact the team at hyperpay.com and we will walk you through onboarding and integration for your store.
